Areas of emphasis/expertise:
Ms. Howell has been with Scholten Fant since 1993. She focuses
her practice on environmental law; commercial, construction
and contract litigation; collections; and real estate transactions.
Her experience includes environmental risk assessment, compliance,
permitting and site remediation; resolution of claims arising from alleged
toxic exposure; and contract negotiation and litigation.
Ms. Howell also serves as a case evaluator for the Circuit Courts of Ottawa
and Allegan Counties. Recent projects included:
- Protecting a property owner from a neighbor’s attempt to construct a marina on the small inland lake they shared;
- Protecting a business owner from an out-of-town individual’s attempt to force the owner to sell his business;
- Forcing a former employee to return over $1,000,000 he embezzled from his former employer;
- Obtaining and collecting judgments for health care services rendered by a client;
- Obtaining wetland, dock and marina permits from the MDEQ and the Army Corps of Engineers for a new real estate development project;
- Investigating and coordinating the remediation of contamination property;
- Conducting due diligence for clients interested in purchasing commercial property;
- Negotiating reduced balances and coordinating payment schedules to allow the client to successfully reorganize its business;
- Assisting a home owner to resolve construction defects;
- Drafting protective lease provisions for a client
who was leasing property to a gas station.
