Daniel practices in the area of municipal law, school law and labor and employment law, providing counsel primarily in the areas of Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act issues, zoning issues, First Amendment (religion and speech) issues, employment issues, teacher tenure issues, student discipline issues and special education issues.

Professional Activities:
Daniel serves as primary counsel in representing Allendale Charter Township, City of Fennville, Holland Charter Township, and Park Township.

Personal:
Daniel and his wife, Wynne, have been happily married since 1994. Dan and Wynne backpacked through the Pictured Rocks in the Upper Peninsula and the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee. Their backpacking trips have been put on hold until their two energetic children are old enough to hike the trails with them. Dan enjoys reading to his two children and to himself, although he reads different material to his children. Dan also enjoys listening to his extensive and diverse collection of music.

Background:
Daniel grew up in a family of educators who instilled in him a strong desire to learn new things, teach others what he has learned and perform public service. Dan has a huge heart for children and has taught conflict resolution and creative problem solving skills to at-risk elementary school students. Dan also taught Constitutional Law at Grand Valley State University as an adjunct professor from 1997-1999.

Dan took a sabbatical from Scholten Fant to serve as the Associate Director of KIDS HOPE USA from 2000-2001, where he guided the non-profit organization to independent status from International Aid. Dan returned to Scholten Fant in the Fall of 2001.

Community Activities:
Daniel serves as the President of the 2-1-1 of Ottawa County Board of Advisors.
Dan also serves as a member of the Tri-Cities Ministries Counseling Board of Directors.
Dan teaches Sunday School (high-school level) at the United Methodist Church of the Dunes.
Dan gives presentations to various groups on the impact of media and popular culture on children and teens.

Honors/Accomplishments:
Daniel played defensive back for the Albion College Football Team from 1988-1991, during which the Brits won three consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Titles (1989-1991). The 1991 Football Team was inducted into the Albion College Athletic Hall of Fame on October 12, 2001.

Pro Bono:
Assisted Tri-Cities Ministry/First Call of Ottawa County in obtaining designation from the Michigan Public Service Commission as the 2-1-1 Call Center for Ottawa County.
